Main purposes of an EVCC
- Communication with the charger
- Exchanges information between the vehicle and the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).
- Communicates charging requirements, limits, and status.
- Charging control
- Helps establish and control the charging session.
- Determines parameters such as charging voltage, current, and power.
- Authentication and authorization
- Supports identification of the vehicle/user before charging.
- Safety
- Ensures charging only starts when the required conditions are satisfied.
- Monitors communication and charging states and can terminate charging if a fault occurs.
- Advanced charging functions
- Supports features such as Plug & Charge.
- Can enable smart charging and, where supported, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) or bidirectional energy transfer.
- Coordination with the vehicle’s systems
- Interfaces with the vehicle’s control systems, typically through the vehicle network (e.g., CAN).
- Communicates charging information to the Battery Management System (BMS) and other relevant controllers.
